Artist statement:

Low-brow and craft-based artwork were my first introductions to the art world via carnival, tattoo, and watercolor illustration. Moving beyond the folk art that heavily influenced my artistic development, I continue to foster creative engagement by practicing oil painting and watercolor painting with the same dark, surrealistic aesthetic that I evoked throughout my previous career as a tattooist. I dissect form, texture, and space in my work as I explore the human condition with a new direction that focuses on human form.

My current work also centers on exhibition curation to showcase growing contemporary artists and to build community while still taking time to paint, present lectures, and write art critique and essays.

A note regarding the arts: The intangible heritage created by making art is as important as the finished product. I believe that leaders must focus on fine art and the humanities, as interest in these studies can build community, teach empathy, and improve mental health.
